How to Build a Classifieds Platform: From City Subsites to Moderation
Classifieds platforms (local life, jobs, real estate, second-hand) look simple, but stable operation requires getting the structure and rules right at build time. Here is a complete build flow.
1. Define sections and city structure
Fix the top-level sections (jobs, real estate, second-hand, services) first, then decide on city subsites. Subsites help local search but amplify thin-content problems — start with just 1–3 priority cities.
2. The posting flow
Keep the form short and sharp: title, category, area, contact, description, images. More fields means fewer posts.
3. Moderation and anti-spam
The biggest risk is spam and non-compliant listings. Use "review before publish" or a combination of keyword filtering plus human spot-checks, and keep a report button.
4. Members and permissions
Separate regular users from business members; businesses can pin, refresh, and bulk-post, while individuals have a daily posting cap.
5. Search and SEO
Generate clean URLs and titles for every listing; category and city pages need unique descriptions so search engines don't flag large numbers of empty pages as low quality.
6. Migration and backups
When migrating from an old system, export listings, users, and images first, map them in a staging environment, then cut over — and keep 301 redirects for old URLs.
